Teaching as a career option is considered to be highly challenging and sensitively rewarding. In our childhood, there were many of us who taught to give a shot to the profession of teaching. But, as time passed, we got more into practicality and started tending vivid and bright dream of well paid jobs with lucrative facilities. Though, teaching today has become a fallback career but finding jobs in the field is not so easy. 

Like Engineering, Medical and Management; Teaching too has an aptitude test i.e. SET, which judges the candidates capabilities to get admission in Ph.D research and/or university level teaching jobs in India. SET stands for State Eligibility Test, is an aptitude test for those students who wish to join the teaching field. The exam is conducted in every Indian state under the guidance of University Grants Commission. SET is held in twice in a year i.e. in the month June and another in December.

Age Limit:- There is no upper age limit.

Qualification:-  The candidates must have Master's Degree or P.G. Diploma from an institution recognized by U.G.C ( The candidates other than SC/ST category who have secured atleast 55% marks (without gracing or rounding off) in Master's or equivalent examination, are eligible for this test. SC/ST/PH/VH (PH-Physically Handicapped. VH-Visually Handicapped i.e. Blind) category candidates who have secured atleast 50% marks(without gracing or rounding off ) in Master's or equivalent examination are eligible for this test)

Candidates who have appeared or will be appearing at the qualifying Master”s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose qualifying examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test. However, such candidates will be admitted for the SET Examination provisionally. Such candidates must complete their P.G. degree examination within two years from the date of SET result with required percentage of marks failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

SET Registration / Application Form

Since SET is a state level test thus it is conducted in every Indian state. Eduvidya provides you admission procedure of Maharashtra State Eligibility Test, which is scheduled to hold on 17th February.

The application form for Maharashtra SET can be obtained from the official website. Candidates are required to fill the application form with their scanned photographs. 
With the application form, students also have to print four pages that include Declaration, Acknowledgement, Challan and Cover Page. Candidates have to submit print out of the Challan at cash counter of any branch of "HDFC Bank" or "Bank of Maharashtra" against the cash payment of Rs. 550 (Rs 450 for SC/ST and OBC). Duly filled application forms and stamped challan copy must be sent to the concerned contact person before 8th January 2013, till 6.00 P.M.

SET Syllabus

There will be three papers for SET exam, where Paper I is intended to judge the candidates’ abilities in different areas like reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness. Syllabus for the Paper I is given below:-

Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Reading Comprehensions, Communication, Reasoning (including Mathematical), Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, Information and Communication Technology, People Environment, Higher Education System: Governance, Polity and Administration.
Paper II and Paper III will be the subjects selected by the candidates. Candidates can choose from an extensive list of subjects covering Marathi, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, History, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Defense and Strategic Studies, Home Science, Library & Information Science, Journalism & Mass Communication, Social Work, Public Administration, Mathematical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Physical, Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Geography, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Education and Physical Education.

Paper Pattern

There will be three papers i.e. Paper I, Paper II and Paper III. 

In Paper I, there will be 60 multiple choice questions of which candidates have to answer any 50 questions. The questions will be of basics nature, intended to judge the candidates’ abilities in different areas like reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness.
Paper II will have 50 multiple choice based questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Paper III will consist of 75 objective type compulsory questions from the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry two marks.

SET Preparation

While preparation, read the topics as you are reading story as this makes your memory strong and enables you to learn the chapters easily. 
Try to make notes in the form of bullets as this will enable you to revise the topics in lesser time. 
Every topic is important so, don’t try to skip any chapter.
Give more time to theatrical papers than practical papers since this is because practicing the practical papers will be easier than theoretical papers.
