Birsa Agriculture University Bihar is one of the oldest of 65 recognized Agriculture Universities' (AU) in India. Situated in Kanke, Ranchi this university was formally inagurated by then the prime minister and strong supporter of India's "Green Revolution". The primary objective of BAU is and continues to be the development of area specific technologies and manpower in field of agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry for people residing in the plateau regions of Bihar and Jharkand. The university offers programmes and activities of education, research and extension in agriculture, veterinary sciences,animal husbandry and forestry. This completely residential university consists of thirty five departments, a College of Biotechnology, six Directorates, three zonal research stations and farms, one university farm, sixteen Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Computer Centre, Central Library and other infrastructure and service units.
